So what is it about Ashtanga that makes it so special or different from other forms of Asana / “styles of yoga” ? In a world that moves at breakneck speed, and for someone with a mind than can run a mile a minute, finding a practice that grounds and centers me has been invaluable. Ashtanga turned out to be that practice for me.

While there are many forms of yogasana, the Ashtanga method offers a unique blend of structure, discipline, and personal growth that fits seamlessly into my life. Let me share why I dedicate myself to this practice and how it has enriched my life—and perhaps you'll find some inspiration for your own journey. Here are 6 reasons to start Ashtanga Yoga for a better life:-

The Power of Routine and Discipline

The Ashtanga method is known for its structured sequence of postures, performed in a specific order, repeatedly. So every practice is the same set sequence. I love that it simply eliminates the added mental burden of planning a sequence to practice. This consistency fosters a sense of discipline that spills over into other areas of my life.

Have you ever tried maintaining a consistent morning routine? How did it impact your day? I remember my first few weeks of Ashtanga practice. Waking up at dawn to get on the mat felt like a herculean task. But as the weeks turned into months, that early morning ‘task’ turned into a ritual which became a steady part of my day. It taught me the value of consistency and the rewards that come from dedication.

Physical Strength and Flexibility

One of the most immediate benefits of Ashtanga yoga is the improvement in physical strength and flexibility. The practice is physically demanding, involving a dynamic flow of postures that build muscle tone, enhance flexibility, and improve overall physical health. Each practice is like a full-body workout, challenging me to push my limits and discover the strength within.

What physical goals are you working towards? I recall the first time I attempted Suptakurmasana (sleeping tortoise pose), a complex forward bend that seemed impossible. My body resisted, and my mind doubted. Yet, with patience and persistent practice, I began to notice small improvements. Months later, I managed to bind my hands and a few years later I could cross my legs behind my head to complete the pose. These moments serve as a reminder of how perseverance can break barriers. End goal aside, we begin to find joy in the process.

Breath and Movement Synchronization

A core component of Ashtanga yoga is the synchronization of breath and movement, known as Vinyasa. This synchronization creates a state of flow, transforming the practice into a moving meditation. The focus on deep, rhythmic breathing helps me stay present and centered, reducing stress and anxiety.

Have you noticed how your breath affects your stress levels? During a particularly stressful period in my corporate job, I found solace in my Ashtanga practice. The intentional inhalations and exhalations, sound of the Ujjayi (oceanic breath) combined with the fluid movements, became a refuge. Each breath seemed to wash away a layer of stress, leaving me more balanced and grounded.

Personal Growth and Self-Discovery

Ashtanga yoga is not just a physical practice; it’s also about personal growth and self-discovery. More than a work-out, it’s a ‘work-in’ , an inward journey through the eight limbs of Ashtanga, as outlined by the sage Patanjali providing a holistic approach to improving oneself. Through consistent practice, I’ve developed a deeper connection with my inner self, gaining insights into my thoughts, emotions, behavior and patterns.

When was the last time you had a moment of true self-reflection? There have been a few ‘aha moments’ during practice or a deep savasana when I felt a sense of peace and clarity wash over me. It was as if I had tapped into a well of inner wisdom, revealing truths about myself that I had long ignored. This experience continue to reinforce my belief in the transformative power of Ashtanga.

A Supportive Community

Practicing Ashtanga has also introduced me to a vibrant and supportive community. I’ve made close friends and shared deep connections. The shared experience of practicing together creates a sense of camaraderie and belonging. Whether in a studio or an online class, the community provides encouragement, inspiration, and a shared commitment to growth.

Continuous Learning and Growth

One of the most rewarding aspects of Ashtanga yoga is the continuous opportunity for learning and growth. Each practice is a new beginning, a chance to explore and refine my understanding of the postures and their nuances. There is always something new to discover, whether it’s a deeper stretch, a more precise alignment, or a new perspective on an old challenge.

What areas of your life do you seek continuous growth in? I often revisit postures I’ve practiced for years, only to discover a subtle detail or adjustment that transforms my experience of the pose. This ongoing journey keeps the practice fresh and engaging, fuelling my passion and dedication.

Ashtanga: An anchor and path for a fulfilling life

Practicing Ashtanga yoga is more than just a physical exercise; it’s a way of life. It has taught me the value of discipline, the power of breath, and the importance of self-awareness. It has strengthened my body, calmed my mind, and improved my overall well-being. As I continue to explore and deepen my practice, I am constantly reminded of the benefits embedded in this tradition.
